OpenAI began testing Sponsored Agents on 16 September 2026: a labeled business agent inside ChatGPT ads, separate from its independent answers, in a closed US alpha. An agent on your own domain answers any assistant.
On 16 September 2026, OpenAI started testing an ad format where the ad talks back. A Sponsored Agent lets someone who has just seen a relevant ad open a labeled conversation with an agent the business pays for, ask follow-up questions, and click through to that business when they are ready.12
Two things matter more than the format. The sponsored conversation is kept separate from the chat the person started, and OpenAI says it is distinct from ChatGPT’s independent answers.13 And the test is small: OpenAI’s help documentation calls it a limited alpha with select advertisers in the United States, and says it is not taking early-access requests.4
For a site owner that creates a choice which did not exist in August. An AI agent can now speak for your business in two places: inside somebody else’s assistant on a media budget, or on your own domain where any assistant can reach it. The second is not a substitute for the first. It is where the knowledge both of them need gets written down.
What OpenAI shipped on 16 September
A person sees a relevant ad, chooses to start the conversation, explains what matters to them, asks follow-ups, and follows a link to the business site when ready. OpenAI’s own illustration is a shopper checking whether an advertised dining table will fit their room.15
Three boundaries come with it. The conversation is labeled as sponsored, runs separately from the chat the person was already having, and is not meant to alter, rank or become part of ChatGPT’s independent answer.13 Buying a Sponsored Agent does not buy a place in the answer ChatGPT gives on its own.
The plumbing landed around it. HubSpot is the first CRM partner, so a business can create ChatGPT ads and follow up on leads without leaving HubSpot. Shopify is the first ecommerce partner: its ChatGPT Ads app syncs a store’s inventory, opened to US merchants on 3 September and to other ChatGPT Ads markets from 23 September.2
ChatGPT ads themselves began as a US test on 9 February 2026 and by late September ran in more than 60 countries.67 Sponsored Agents are a closed test inside it, and two participants have confirmed publicly: Wayfair, at limited scale, and Angi, whose agent hands homeowners into its own service-request flow.89
What OpenAI has not published
OpenAI has described what a person sees. Three things a site owner would ask first have no public answer yet.
Where the agent’s knowledge comes from. OpenAI has not explained how an advertiser tells its agent what to say, which sources it draws on, or how a wrong answer gets corrected.
What the business receives. OpenAI’s help documentation, as reported, says the advertiser sees only the messages a person sends to the sponsored agent, not the chat that came before.5 What a lead looks like when it reaches the business is not described.
What it costs. No price for the format has been published.8
Wayfair has written its own rules: its test runs with “guardrails around product accuracy, transparency and service handoffs”.8 That is the short list any agent speaking for a business needs written down: which facts are true, what it will not say, and when a person takes over.
Rented distribution, owned surface
The rented agent buys attention: it appears inside an assistant with a very large audience, right after the buyer asked a question the ad matched. The surface belongs to OpenAI, the reach is one assistant, and the conversation lasts as long as the campaign.
The owned agent buys an address. An agent on your own domain answers visitors in guest chat and exposes a JSON route, so a visiting assistant can ask it questions instead of guessing from your marketing pages. Tobira’s Site Agent does this from approved public knowledge, with the owner deciding which facts are public and which stay owner-only.10
| Sponsored Agent in ChatGPT | Agent on your own domain | |
|---|---|---|
| Who owns the surface | OpenAI | You |
| How a person arrives | Paid ad placement | Your site, a profile, a link, an assistant |
| Which assistants reach it | ChatGPT | Any that can read the published route |
| What ends it | The campaign | Taking it down |
| Where its knowledge lives | Not documented publicly | Files you host and edit |
| Effect on ChatGPT’s own answer | None, by design1 | None either, and not claimed |
The last row is the honest one. Neither is a way into an assistant’s organic answer, and neither is an llms.txt file: SE Ranking found one on about 10% of domains with no measurable citation lift, which we looked at separately.11
OAI-AdsBot: the documented link to your site
OpenAI’s crawler documentation lists one bot built for its ad product. OAI-AdsBot visits only landing pages submitted as ChatGPT ads, checks them against ad policy and identifies itself as OAI-AdsBot/1.0. OpenAI says its data is not used to train foundation models, and publishes its IP ranges.12 The entry was reported in April, months before Sponsored Agents, and OpenAI’s advertiser guidance tells advertisers to let it through.13
One line in that entry matters more than the rest: OpenAI may also use landing-page content to decide when the ad is most relevant to show.12 The page an ad points to is reviewed for policy, read for relevance, and it is where the sponsored conversation hands the person over. If it quotes a price your pricing page contradicts, that is the version the reviewer checks and the buyer lands on.
The documentation does not say a Sponsored Agent answers from your website; that link is not public. The practical point holds without it. The page you advertise and whatever an agent says in your name have to agree, and that starts with one approved set of facts both are written from.
What an owned agent does that an ad slot cannot
An ad placement ends at the click. Three things an agent on your own domain does have no equivalent in a sponsored slot.
It answers assistants, not only people. Relovisa, an immigration consultancy that shares a founder with Tobira, links its agent from relovisa.co, and Tobira serves the guest contract. Read on 25 September 2026, that guest-agent.json declared a stage-1 schema: a multi-turn session with a 30-turn soft limit, a 5-turn grace and a 50-turn hard cap, a read-only GET /@relovisa/ask?q= route, and six actions from asking a question to preparing a booking.14 The schema is early, so the shape is the point. It is the difference between agent-readable and agent-addressable: one lets software read your pages, the other gives it something to talk to.
It holds a boundary you wrote. Relovisa’s boundaries file says it is a consultancy, not a law firm, and sends legal questions to a paid consultation instead of answering them. The rule lives in a file the owner edits and anyone can read, not in an ad platform’s settings screen.14
It does not close for the visitor. In the same contract, payment is always completed by the human and contact details go out only with the visitor’s authorization. Visiting assistants are guests, not trusted peers.1410
What a site agent is not: a promise of results. Tobira Site Agent publishes the machine-readable files AI agents look for and gives them a live endpoint to ask and act, while your own robots.txt, markup, sitemaps and WebMCP tools remain separate layers on your domain. As listed on tobira.ai/agentic-site/ on 16 October 2026, Tobira Site Agent has a free plan that runs on your own AI key and paid plans at $49, $169, $399 and $799 a month (USD, excluding taxes), and tobira.ai lists what is not launch-ready, including guaranteed leads and guaranteed AI-search ranking.10 The comparison is not “better than an ad”. It is “a thing you keep”.
Run both, write the knowledge once
For most businesses the Sponsored Agent decision is not live yet: the alpha is closed and US-only. The ordinary ChatGPT ads underneath it are open far wider, and every campaign points at a landing page.
So write the knowledge first, in files you control: approved public facts with one value for every number, the boundaries, what a good outcome is, where a person takes over. Wayfair’s three guardrails map onto that list. The same pack is what your landing pages should agree with, what a visiting assistant reads, and what your own site agent answers from.
Two limits stay in view. A rented agent lives on one assistant, and assistant surfaces change. OpenAI switched off its Atlas browser on 9 August 2026, less than a year after launch, and surfaces you do not own can be discontinued between one quarter and the next.15 And identity is untouched by both. A label tells a person the business paid for the placement. It does not tell the business who it is talking to, or whether that person agreed to be contacted afterwards.
That gap is the one Tobira works on: an @handle a human can read, and a reveal that happens only when both sides agree, so what an agent carries between networks belongs to its owner rather than the platform it appeared on.
Whether a conversation inside an ad sells better than a link is the question the alpha exists to answer. OpenAI has not published a result, and the brands taking part describe it as a pilot.
What to remember
- Sponsored Agents have been a closed US alpha since 16 September 2026: labeled, separate from the user’s chat, and by OpenAI’s description not part of ChatGPT’s independent answer. Wayfair and Angi have confirmed they are in it.
- OpenAI has not published where the agent’s knowledge comes from, what a lead looks like, or the price.
- Neither an ad nor a site agent establishes who the visitor is or whether they agreed to be contacted later.
- OAI-AdsBot reviews ad landing pages, so the advertised page and anything an agent says in your name need one source of facts.
FAQ
What are ChatGPT Sponsored Agents?
An ad format OpenAI began testing on 16 September 2026. After seeing a relevant ad, a person can open a labeled conversation with an agent the advertiser sponsors, ask follow-up questions, and click through to the business site. The conversation runs separately from the chat they were already having.1
Can I buy a Sponsored Agent for my business today?
Almost certainly not. OpenAI describes the format as a limited alpha with select advertisers in the United States and says it is not accepting early-access requests. Ordinary ChatGPT ads are a different matter: they now run in more than 60 countries.47
How much do ChatGPT ads cost?
OpenAI has published no price for Sponsored Agents. For ordinary ChatGPT ads, trade reporting puts the February 2026 launch at a $60 CPM with a $200,000 minimum commitment, cut to $50,000 in April and removed for US self-serve buyers by May.7
Does a Sponsored Agent change how ChatGPT answers questions about my business?
Not by OpenAI’s description. The sponsored conversation is distinct from ChatGPT’s independent answers and is not meant to alter or rank them. It is paid placement next to an answer, not a change to the answer.13
What is OAI-AdsBot and should I allow it?
The crawler OpenAI uses to check landing pages submitted as ChatGPT ads against its ad policy; OpenAI may also use their content to decide when an ad is relevant. It identifies itself as OAI-AdsBot/1.0, visits only pages submitted as ads, and its data is not used to train foundation models. OpenAI tells advertisers to allow it; if you are not advertising, it has nothing to review.1213
Is a site agent an alternative to advertising in ChatGPT?
They answer different problems. Ads buy reach inside one assistant while a campaign runs. A site agent gives your domain an address any assistant can query, and it keeps working after the campaign ends. Both depend on the facts you publish, so the knowledge work is shared.
